Upstream Process Development Scientist in DNA bioproduction for gene therapy (M/F)

Mission Description

Main tasks and responsibilities relate to fermentation/upstream process development.
The candidate is expected to:

  • Define, develop and optimize microbial fermentation processes, using bioreactors.
  • Scale-up fermentation from laboratory to production scale.
  • Actively participate to process transfer from R&D department to GMP production department
  • Deliver USP processes and process flowcharts in a timely manner
  • Identify and implement new technologies and solutions for E.coli fermentation processes
  • Perform experiments and routine lab analysis following established protocols, autonomously.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records according with company policies.
  • Anticipate potential problems and perform troubleshooting analysis and experiments.
  • Multitask and resistant to stress generated by project deadlines.

Specific tasks

  • Setting up bioreactors or shake-flasks. Monitoring / controlling fermentation process, harvesting culture, cleaning up fermenters, and maintaining the fermentation system and its supporting equipment.
  • Analyze samples for productivity assessment (plasmid DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis,…).
  • Designing and performing experiments to optimize culture medium recipes and feeding strategies to improve product yield.
  • Prepare tech transfer documents and manage tech transfer activities from development to production scale.
  • A successful candidate also needs to communicate effectively with co-workers and partners on a daily basis.


Candidate profile

  • Master Scientist, BioEngineer or PhD in Biology, chemistry or equivalent, through education and/or experience.
  • Previous experience, knowledge and hands-on experience on the principles, practices and techniques of fermentation and bioreactors’ technology.
  • Hands-on experience working with microorganisms, preferably E. coli.
  • Experience in developing novel fermentation processes and upscaling is a big plus.
  • Experience working in a GMP environment is a plus.
  • High degree of personal accountability being able to work and handle multiple assignments independently with broad guidance from leadership, and deliver results within project specific timelines.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret scientific articles and technical procedures.
  • Ability to communicate and present data to the team.
  • Ability to transmit passion and enthusiasm

Other Skills

  • Computer skills: Office package. Experience with data management and statistics software is a plus.
  • The candidate must be fluent in French, English knowledge is a plus.
