With €200 million annual research budget , ULB positions itself amongst the most active European universities. It has a longstanding tradition of excellence with four scientific Nobel Prizes. ULB is an active member of the European Research Area (ERA).
Research in life sciences is performed by 47 research groups from the faculties of Sciences, Medicine and Pharmacy, located both on Brussels South Charleroi BioPark and the ULB Brussels Health Pole. These groups have combined their forces to create three cross-faculty research institutes:
U-IRC is focused on molecular immunology, preclinical immunology and human and translational immunology to enhance the understanding of immune-mediated disorders and the development of new immune-therapies.
The mission of UNI is to understand the development and functioning of the brain at very different scales, from genes to consciousness, and from neural pathways to human behaviour, to pave the way for new treatment options for various CNS indications.
U-CRC is focused on cancer research including, cellular and molecular biology, genomics, epigenetics, proteomics, immunology, and bioinformatics with the aim to discover new cancer treatments.
